Product Versatility with a Concrete Block Machine

When selecting a concrete block machine, consider not only the number of blocks to be produced, but also which products you plan to manufacture at the same facility. Hollow blocks, pumice blocks, hollow floor blocks, curbstones, interlocking pavers and drainage channels have different geometries and applications. Switching between products depends on selecting a mould suited to the target product and a machine compatible with that mould.

Which Products Can Be Manufactured?

When developing your production plan, define the dimensions, cross-section and raw material requirements of each product separately. The following product groups should be assessed with a suitable machine and mould combination:

• Hollow block: A concrete block used in wall construction, with internal cavities formed by the mould geometry.
• Pumice block: A type of block produced using mixes containing pumice. The mix and mould should be selected according to the required product properties.
• Hollow floor block: Used in floor slab construction. Its dimensions and cavity configuration should be considered alongside the requirements of the relevant floor slab application.
• Curbstone: Used to define boundaries along roads, pavements and landscaped areas; its cross-section is determined by the curbstone mould.
• Interlocking paver: A paving product whose shape and interlocking geometry depend on the selected mould.
• Drainage channel: A product used to direct surface water. The channel cross-section and dimensions should be confirmed before production.

Common Block and Curbstone Dimensions

Common concrete block dimensions include 100x400x200 mm, 150x400x200 mm and 200x400x200 mm. For curbstones, a size of 150x700x300 mm may be considered. These dimensions should be clearly specified when discussing mould requirements and machine suitability.

In addition to external dimensions, the number and shape of cavities and the product cross-section are also important. Two products with the same external dimensions may require different moulds. Do not assume that the number of blocks produced per cycle applies directly to curbstones, hollow floor blocks or paving stones; assess the mould layout for each product separately.

Switching Products by Changing Moulds

Changing moulds is the primary way to switch between different product geometries on a suitable machine. However, not every mould can be assumed to work with every machine. When planning a new product, check mould compatibility with the machine, target dimensions and the product layout within each cycle together.

Raw Materials and Selecting the Right Machine

Cement, sand, crushed stone and pumice are raw materials selected according to the target product. Cement acts as the binder, while sand and crushed stone form the aggregate components. Pumice is particularly relevant to pumice block production. Rather than assuming that the same mix will suit every product, the mix design should be determined according to the required product properties.

Base your machine selection on your main product, product dimensions, planned daily output and any moulds you intend to add in the future. This allows you to assess not only your current block production needs, but also future product changeovers.
